Nuʻuanu (Town Boulders) Clean up

Nov. 2020

Nuʻuanu Clean up and culture awareness day:

Kānaka Climbers & The State Parks are working on accurately accounting and protecting all cultural and historical resources at Nuʻuanu, Kapena Fall State Park. This was our first large clean up in preparation for the upcoming Inventory survey. Having responsible hikers and climbers in this area is the best form of protection from vandalism to the historical basalt stacked agricultural terraces, platforms and petroglyphs. Our goal is to set the foundation blocks within the State Parks recreational planning for a more responsible legal access to hiking and climbing within Hawaiʻi State Parks.

Huge Mahalo to our Sponsors and Volunteers for supporting Kānaka Climbers and the cultural awareness around the pōhaku we all climb. We had a total of 23 volunteers, split between time slots, due to COVID restrictions. We removed a total of 1,649 lbs of ʻōpala (rubbish) from 2.75 acres.

Thank you to HiClimb for sponsoring the clean up, Mahalo to the Kanoa-Wong ʻOhana for the beautiful pule and opening words for the day. Of course this wouldn't of been possible without the volunteers. The support from the climbing community has reinvigorated our love for the land and our culture. Massive mahalo for being opened minded and willing to learn as you worked.

OUR MISSION:

To be an educational resource for the outdoor recreational community, to help them responsibly, safely and ethically access the outdoors in Hawaiʻi. Our group's plan is to work closely with Native Hawaiian Preservation groups, Hawaiian rights groups, the State and act as a bridge to the Hawai'i recreational community. We are here to advise and educate on culturally appropriate and respectful practices in Hawaiʻi, while working to revive traditional climbing practices within the Hawaiian communities.
